Styling Sherwin Williams' 2023 Color of the Year

Every year I look forward to the Color of the Year announcements. I love reading about why each paint company chooses the Color they do and how I can use it in client interior design projects. Last year, Sherwin Williams named Urbane Bronze (link to Warm and Artsy project) – a deep ebony with charcoal undertones – their 2022 Color of the Year, and I was obsessed. This year, the global paint company is taking a nature-inspired approach with their 2023 Color of the Year: Redend Point – a subdued terracotta with pink undertones meant to evoke warmth, groundedness, and belonging. Below is an image I took at High Point Market of their philosophy behind choosing the color.

INTRIGUE. WARMTH. GROUNDEDNESS.:

At first glance, I have to admit I underestimated the color’s beauty. But after sitting with the color at High Point Market (literally), and feeling the intrigue, the warmth, the groundedness, I easily fell in love. Simply put: the color feels like a nice, warm hug; almost as if it’s encouraging you to pause for a moment, let down your shoulders, take a deep breath, and feel hopeful again for the future. Who knew a color could do so much?! ;) Stay tuned for a blog post on color psychology and why choosing the right colors for your home is so important!

STYLING REDEND POINT:

As unique as the color is, you may wonder how you can go about incorporating it into the design of your home. See below how I would design a chic master bedroom using Redend Point as the star of the show.

  1. Add warmth with wood and other natural materials

  2. Add intrigue with black and white geometric patterns

  3. Brighten the space and color palette with brass accents

  4. Ground your space with pops of fresh (or faux!) greenery

REDEND POINT COLOR COMBINATIONS:

Another beautiful thing about Redend Point is just how well it plays with other colors. You can pair it with a variety of other Sherwin Williams paint colors easily. The additional color you choose can change the ambiance of your space entirely. Adding navy blue to the color palette feels scholarly and sophisticated, whereas combining Redend Point with burnt orange is bold and unexpected. See the various color combinations Sherwin Williams suggests below.

PEEL-AND-STICK PAINT SAMPLES:

So what do you think about Redend Point? Are you planning on bringing the color into your space this year?

If you’re ready to dive in and make it your own, check out Samplize, a company I partner with and always use when narrowing down paint colors for interior design projects. Samplize offers peel-and-stick paint samples using two coats of the actual paint, so you can accurately visualize how the color will look in your space – before committing (and without painting a dozen swatches on the wall.)
