3 Must-Have Home Office Design Features

With almost 30 million of us in the United States now working from home (U.S. Census), it’s safe to say the home office is here to stay. Your office is one of the most essential spaces in your home because it’s where you make a living for yourself and your loved ones. And if your home office is uninspired, uncomfortable, and cluttered, you’ll start to dread going in there, and you definitely won’t do your best work. It’s absolutely possible to have a home office that energizes you and makes you feel productive (and one that you’re not embarrassed to turn your webcam on in!). Keep reading to see my top tips for designing a home office you’ll be excited to work in.

Tip #1: Dress Up Your Walls

Gone are the days of having to work in bland, boring, beige cubicles. Now with the ability to personalize our office spaces at home, you can add visual interest to your walls in a way that brings energy to your space, inspires you to work hard, and reflects who you are. Hang artwork and wall decor, paint an accent wall, or add wallpaper to your Zoom Room as a nice background like in this Transitional Glam Home Office in Durham, NC. Don’t forget to add family photos so you can be reminded of who you’re doing it for when the workdays get long.

Tip #2: Have a Second Place to Sit

Whether or not you have clients that visit you in your home office, having another place to sit other than your work desk is ideal. A soft spot to land that can serve as a place to relax when you need to step away from the computer, read a book, or drink a cup of coffee, it’s great being able to switch up the energy in the room whenever you need. In this business/sales coach’s home office, we added green velvet wingback chairs for the client and her guests to enjoy.

Tip #3: Reduce Clutter and Add Storage

You know that panicky feeling you get when you can’t find that one piece of paper? That will no longer be an issue if you declutter and organize your home office. (Stay tuned for a guest blog post from the professional organizer I collaborate with on client projects!) Having a designated place for materials, documents, and paperwork helps to streamline your process and keep your space clean. In this home office, we opted for a clean, minimal, multifunctional piece of storage furniture with shelves on top and pull-out file drawers below for the client to store important files.
